The folks at Rapid Transit felt that these were the requirements for a internal-gear hub that's intended for BMX use (or any sort of hub that has an internal mechanism, such as a coaster brake, etc):
- it must have a STEEL SHELL (though a few BMXers go with aluminium shells)
To be able to take large drops and other wheel strikes
- the torque-handling part isn't the main concern
It was felt that this wouldn't be as big of a deal.
- it should have a ONE-PIECE AXLE
Some internal-gear hubs may have a two-piece axle, that doesn't go all the way through. This would comprimise its ability to handle large drops.
