There are various ways to read the OBDII code, including having a local AutoZone/Murrays/etc do it for free. Ultimately I decided to get a ELM327-based reader, since that offers maximum flexibility.

You can reset the ECU by diconnecting the negative battery cable, then pump the brakes a few times. Reconnect.
